Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology

(UniKL MIMET)

A MARA Technical Institute of Higher Learning was established in 2004. It was initially established as Institut Kemahiran Tinggi MARA (IKTM) and approved in the Seventh Malaysia Plan (1996 – 2000) and later registered as Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology (MIMET). On 20th August 2002, MIMET became an Institute of University Kuala Lumpur and named University Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology (UniKL MIMET). The primary function of UniKL MIMET is to offer a number of industry-specific courses.
The programmes offered are aimed to produce highly competent personnel for the marine and maritime industry. UniKL MIMET is committed to providing a conducive learning environment that encourages students’ technical competence, creativity, and skills. UniKL MIMET aims to provide a learning experience that strikes a balance in students’ attainment and growth regarding knowledge, skills, values, character and spirituality. Students who are graduated from UniKL MIMET will have the opportunity to expand their career in various fields such as Boatbuilding, Shipbuilding, Welding and Fabrication (ferrous/non-ferrous), Ship/Project Planning, Naval Architecture, Technical Design/Draught Person, CAM Programming, Ship Maintenance, Hydraulic and Pneumatics, CNC Machining, Steel & Aluminum Fabrication, Woodworking, Fiberglass and others.
The management and academic staff are qualified, experienced and specialized in their respective disciplines. Currently, UniKL MIMET offers 4 Diploma and 4 Bachelor Degree programmes. These programmes have been developed to produce skilled human capital required by the Malaysian and international shipyards/boatyards and marine engineering companies. UniKL MIMET will also offer training programmes, particularly for technicians to upgrade and acquire merit recognition and certification. The university has state-of-the-art training facilities and peripherals to provide the students with adequate technical knowledge and know-how. The university and training environment is an essential ingredient in determining the students’ performance and enjoyment of student life. We also view that students’ accommodation is vital to ensure a very conducive learning environment. A qualified Counselor/Student Advisor is available at the Counselling Service Centre.
The various co-curricular activities, clubs, and societies allow students to explore their creativity and potential in arts or sports. Transportation services are also available to assist students with their travelling needs. The UniKL MIMET Admissions Unit will consider credit transfer for applicants from other recognized universities or colleges. The deciding factors include the type of institution attended, the applicability of the subjects to the programme the applicant wishes to enter, and the grades achieved. In addition, we will assist qualified local students in applying for study loans from participating banks and government bodies, including education loans from MARA.
