Diploma of Engineering Technology in Marine Engineering is designed to cover engineering knowledge and practices related to marine engineering. It also emphasize on the handling and maintenance of ship’s main propulsion plant, marine power plant generation, ship construction and naval architecture. This programme also include basic mechanical engineering knowledge. The programme is conducted for six semester which includes industries training for 24 months.

Education and training programmes conducted are designed not only to meet but exceed the minimum level of skills and competencies stipulated in the International Conventional on Standards of Training and Watch Keeping for Seafarers (STCW) 1995 and others relevant national and international standards and guidelines. Students completed this programme will be exempted from Part A Certificate of Competency for Fourth Class Engineer Officers> 3000 kW unlimited by the Marine Department, Ministry of Transport (MOT) Malaysia.

Realizing the vast array of the maritime sector that includes marine engineering, specifically watchkeeping engineers in which the institute had taken the initiative to develop a programme namely Diploma of Engineering Technology in Marine Engineering – DME with the support from shipping company, ship owner, shipbuilding and ship repair industrial experts.

Entry Requirements

  • Pass in SPM or its equivalent with at least a pass in English and credits (minimum Grade C and higher) in five (5) subjects; Bahasa Melayu, Mathematics, Science / Pure Science / Technical and two (2) other subjects; OR
  • Pass O-Level with at least grade C in Mathematics, one (1) subject in Science / Technical / Vocational and three (3) others subjects and also pass in English; OR
  • Pass in SPM and Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (Tahap 3) in Marine Mechanical Maintenance with minimum CGPA 2.00.

   Additional Requirement: Must not color blind.

Programme Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

Upon graduation, the students of Diploma of Engineering Technology in Marine Engineering will be able to:

PLO 1: Apply knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization to wide practical procedures and practices in marine engineering.

PLO 2: Identify and solve well-defined marine engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using codified methods of analysis specific to their field of activity.

PLO 3: Design solutions for well-defined technical problems and assist with the design of system, components or processes to meet specified needs with appropriate consideration for public health and safety, cultural, societal, and environmental considerations in marine engineering.

PLO 4: Conduct investigations of well-defined problems: locate and search relevant codes and catalogues, conduct standard tests and measurements in marine engineering.

PLO 5: Apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools to well-defined marine engineering problems, with an awareness of the limitations.

PLO 6: Demonstrate knowledge of societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to engineering technician practice and solutions to well-defined marine engineering problems.

PLO 7: Understand and evaluate the sustainability and impact of engineering technician work in the solution of well-defined marine engineering problems in societal and environmental contexts.

PLO 8: Understand and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of technician practice.

PLO 9: Function effectively as an individual and as a member in diverse technical teams.

PLO 10: Communicate effectively on well-defined marine engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, by being able to comprehend the work of others, document their own work, and give and receive clear instructions.

PLO 11: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of engineering management and entrepreneurship principles and apply these to one’s own work as a member or leader in a technical team and to manage projects in multidisciplinary environments.

PLO 12: Recognise the need for and have the ability to engage in independent updating in the context of specialised technical knowledge.
